Under various funding (Czech Development Agency, FDOV) and in link with local private companies (PROGRAIN), PIN is implementing a project supporting the development of organic agriculture in Moldova from August 2015 to August 2019.
In 2017 PIN and PROGRAIN are supporting 45 farmers to convert part or the totality of farms (mostly arable crops) to organic agriculture. These farmers have already been introduced to the concept of organic farming and need further support to ensure a sustainable organic farming system. More farmers are expected to join the project.
PIN Moldova is currently looking for 3 experts in organic agriculture farming to directly coach Moldovan farmers in 2017 and 2018.
Within this framework PIN is looking for regional experts for coaching of farmers for organic cereal growing:
4-hour farm visit to allow for discussion with the farmers, review of the fields, discussion of the main issues to modify the system into organic agriculture.
Through coaching, the farmers understand the changes to be done on their farm, are offered technical solutions to improve their system, are able to address the changes with the expert first-hand information, find a resource person with which to dialogue over the conversion period, with the final goal of developing a strong and sustainable organic system.
Experts need to be familiar with:
Principles of OA: Requirements of OA certification, trend of organic market: international & domestic, overview of key organic technologies and agricultural management practices
Certification, administration and control: Certification requirements, internal management system, risks in organic farming and management of risks, establishment of a separate accounting and administration system for organic
Conversion planning: Understanding conversion to organic of arable farms, assessment of what crops to grow: market potential versus agronomic potential, designing a favorable crop rotation, identifying practices to modify
Strategies for soil fertility and balanced plant nutrition: designing a suitable crop rotation, composting, manures (types, origin, certificates), cover crops/green manures, mineral and microbial fertilizers, mulching, soil cultivation/tillage;
Weed management, management of pests and diseases
Production cycle of various crops including ‘unusual’ cultures for Moldova: pumpkin, millet, chickpea, beans, lentils,… pharmaceutical plants, various legumes, intercropping of cultures
Storage of organic products: for export
Expected amount of days for the assignment:
5-6 farm coached per visit = 3 days
At least one technical workshop with other experts per year = 1 day
Travel time= 1 day
Total= 10 days/year
Profile of international or regional experts
- +10 years of experience in organic farming focused on arable crops and or mixed farming
- Practical experience on a farm
- Proven record of training to trainers
- Knowledge of Russian or Romanian, English is an advantage
